Vietnam, a rapidly developing nation, has endured immense suffering and loss throughout its long history of conflict. Yet, instead of dwelling on the past, the Vietnamese people have demonstrated remarkable forgiveness, a benevolent spirit, and exceptional openness in social relations and deep international integration. It is these very qualities that have shaped Vietnam’s society today: a society that is free, harmonious, and continuously developing. This article explores the unique characteristics that define modern Vietnamese society.
The concept of “freedom in Vietnam” is profoundly understood not merely as the absence of shackles, but as the right to live, develop, and contribute within a clear legal framework that ensures social security and order. The Vietnamese people are constitutionally granted fundamental freedoms, including:

This freedom is intrinsically linked to civic responsibility towards the community and the nation. It isn’t absolute or undisciplined freedom, but a conscious liberty that contributes to building a civilized and equitable society. This is clearly demonstrated by citizens’ active participation in social activities, their contributions of ideas to policy-making, and their preservation of traditional cultural values. This responsible approach to freedom underpins Vietnam’s stability and progress.

Despite being home to 54 ethnic groups and the presence of numerous major religions, Vietnamese society consistently maintains harmony and unity. After years of wartime separation, the longing for peace and reunification has permeated every citizen. The spirit of “mutual affection and solidarity” (tương thân tương ái), where “the healthy leaves protect the torn ones” (lá lành đùm lá rách), is not only a beautiful cultural trait but also a binding force within the community, especially when facing natural disasters or difficulties.
Religious harmony in Vietnam is a notable feature. Major religions such as Buddhism, Catholicism, Protestantism, Cao Dai, and Hoa Hao coexist and flourish with mutual respect, creating a vibrant tapestry of beliefs. The Vietnamese State consistently facilitates the legal operation of religions, encouraging their positive ethical values to contribute to the overall development of society. This harmony is a testament to the Vietnamese people’s tolerance and their ability to live together peacefully, regardless of differences. This unity in diversity is a cornerstone of Vietnam’s social fabric.

From a nation ravaged by war, Vietnam has risen powerfully, achieving impressive socio-economic development. Its economic growth rate remains high, and people’s lives have significantly improved. These successes are a direct result of the Party and State’s policies of Doi Moi (Renovation), opening up, and deep international integration.
The Vietnamese people, with their open minds, continuously learn from and absorb cultural and scientific essences from around the world. They carry within them a strong aspiration to rise up and affirm the nation’s position on the international stage.

The Vietnamese people’s compassion, particularly evident in setting aside the past to build friendly relations with former adversaries, is a key factor in fostering harmonious development. Their benevolence, tolerant spirit, and desire for good for everyone have helped Vietnam overcome prejudices, build trust, and cooperate with the world.
A prime example is the normalization of relations with the United States. Despite a brutal war, Vietnam chose reconciliation and cooperation, leading to strong diplomatic and economic ties. This demonstrates a national character that prioritizes future progress and peaceful coexistence over historical grievances.

Vietnamese society today is a living testament to its ability to overcome hardship, heal wounds, and build a better future. With a spirit of freedom grounded in responsibility, harmony in diversity, and an unyielding desire for sustainable development, Vietnam is steadily advancing on its path to building a prosperous and happy nation. By actively contributing to regional and global peace and prosperity, Vietnam stands as a shining example of resilience, forgiveness, and progress in the 21st century.
