Passports and visas are the two most critical documents international travelers must prioritize right from the start of their trip planning.

  1. Unilateral Visa Exemption Policy (Newest & Extended until March 14, 2028):

As per Resolution No. 44/NQ-CP dated March 7, 2025, Vietnam has extended its unilateral visa exemption policy for citizens of 12 countries for a maximum stay of 45 days from the date of entry, regardless of passport type or purpose of entry. This policy is effective from March 15, 2025, until March 14, 2028, and will be reviewed for further extension according to Vietnamese law.

Citizens of the following countries must meet these conditions: valid passport with at least 6 months validity from the date of entry, a round-trip or onward travel ticket, and not subject to entry prohibition under Vietnamese law.

  • Germany
  • France
  • Italy
  • Spain
  • United Kingdom (Note: Does not apply to British National Overseas (BNO) passports)
  • Russia (Also under bilateral agreement, but the 45-day unilateral policy offers a longer current stay)
  • Japan
  • South Korea
  • Denmark
  • Sweden
  • Norway
  • Finland

Additionally, according to Resolution No. 11/NQ-CP dated January 15, 2025, citizens of the following countries are also granted a visa exemption for a maximum stay of 45 days from the date of entry, specifically for tourism purposes organized by Vietnamese international travel agencies. This policy is effective from March 1, 2025, until December 31, 2025.

  • Republic of Poland
  • Czech Republic
  • Swiss Confederation

  1. Other Visa Exemption Cases:

  • APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC) Holders: Exempt from visa requirements for entry and stay in Vietnam for up to 60 days with a valid passport.
  • Visa Exemption for Coastal Economic Zones: Foreigners entering designated coastal economic zones may be granted visa-free stays of up to 30 days under specific government regulations. These zones typically have international airports, defined geographical boundaries, and are separate from the mainland, aligning with socio-economic development policies without compromising national defense, security, or social order. A prime example is Phu Quoc Island, where international visitors can stay for up to 30 days without a visa if they arrive directly at the island.
  • Overseas Vietnamese (Viet Kieu) and their Spouses/Children (if holding foreign passports): May be granted a Visa Exemption Certificate valid for up to 5 years. Each entry under this certificate allows a stay of up to 180 days, which can be extended for an additional 90 days at the Immigration Department.

  1. Countries Offering Unilateral Visa Exemption TO VIETNAMESE CITIZENS (Exiting Vietnam):

These are countries where Vietnamese citizens can travel without needing a prior visa. However, specific conditions and durations may vary and are subject to change by the respective governments. Here are some key countries:

  • Belarus: Up to 30 days (including arrival and departure days, for tourism purposes, via Minsk National Airport, with specific required documents).
  • Kazakhstan: Up to 30 calendar days for a single entry for tourism, business, or private affairs upon invitation.
  • Kyrgyzstan: Up to 30 days.
  • Ecuador: Up to 90 days for tourism.
  • Chile: Up to 90 days for tourism.
  • Panama: Up to 180 days (requires a tourist card and entry for tourism purposes).
  • Thailand: Up to 30 days.
  • Singapore: Up to 30 days.
  • Malaysia: Up to 30 days.
  • Indonesia: Up to 30 days.
  • Laos: Up to 30 days.
  • Cambodia: Up to 30 days.
  • Brunei: Up to 14 days.
  • Myanmar: Up to 14 days.
  • Philippines: Up to 21 days.

Note: Other countries like South Korea (for Jeju Island or transit), Taiwan (via conditional e-visa), Sri Lanka (via eTA), Iran (visa on arrival), etc., also offer favorable entry policies for Vietnamese citizens. Always check specific information from the embassy/consulate of the respective country.

Important Considerations:

  • The visa-exempt stay period begins from the date of entry.
  • Your passport must generally have AT LEAST 6 MONTHS of VALIDITY from your entry date (some bilateral agreements may specify 3 months).
  • You may be required to show a return or onward travel ticket.
  • You must not be subject to any entry bans according to Vietnamese law.
  • For those benefiting from unilateral exemptions, there might have been conditions regarding the time elapsed since their last visa-free entry (previously 30 days, but this requirement has been removed for some short-stay entries). However, with the new 45-day policy, travelers can now enjoy a longer stay.

Disclaimer: Visa policies are dynamic. While this information is current as of July 2025, always double-check the latest official regulations before making travel plans. Contact the Vietnam Immigration Department or the nearest Vietnamese embassy/consulate for the most accurate and specific information for your nationality and travel circumstances.
