As spring awakens across Vietnam’s northern mountains, the Tay ethnic group joyfully welcomes their most significant annual event: the Lồng Tồng Festival, also known as the “Going-to-the-Fields Festival.” This ancient tradition is a vibrant blend of sacred ritual and lively celebration, marking the start of the new planting season and praying for abundant harvests and prosperity.
The Lồng Tồng Festival, a custom passed down for centuries, is typically held in the first lunar month, right after Tet Nguyen Dan. The core purpose of this festival is twofold:

The Lồng Tồng Festival unfolds in two main parts: a solemn ritual (phần lễ) and a vibrant festive component (phần hội).
The Solemn Ritual (Phần Lễ): Held in a designated village field, the ceremony begins with meticulous offerings to the gods, including traditional dishes and colorful “quả còn” (fabric balls symbolizing fertility). A respected shaman leads prayers, invoking deities for peace and good fortune. A key moment is the symbolic first plowing, where elders take the initial strokes, blessing the land and officially commencing the planting season.
After the solemn rites, the festival bursts into joyful celebration with traditional games and cultural performances.
The Lively Festive Part (Phần Hội):

The Lồng Tồng Festival is a living tradition, showcasing the Tay people’s deep connection to their land, ancestors, and community. In an increasingly modern world, this festival plays a crucial role in preserving unique cultural identities, fostering intergenerational understanding, and sharing the rich heritage of Vietnam’s ethnic minority groups.
If you find yourself in northern Vietnam during early spring, experiencing a Lồng Tồng Festival offers an unforgettable and authentic cultural insight into the vibrant spirit and enduring traditions of the Tay people.
