Vietnamese Pepper Ranking #1

1. World’s #1 Position: Vietnam, the King of Pepper

Vietnam proudly holds the number one spot globally for pepper production. For many years, we’ve consistently led not only in output but also in export value. Vietnamese pepper accounts for about 35-40% of the world’s total production, and astonishingly, we contribute nearly 55-60% of the total global pepper export revenue. This makes Vietnam an essential player in the global pepper supply chain, ensuring this fiery flavor is always available on billions of dining tables.

Vietnam’s key pepper-growing regions are primarily in the Central Highlands and Southeast, with Dak Nong and Dak Lak serving as the two largest pepper capitals, making up the bulk of the country’s output. While pepper cultivation areas have seen a slight decrease in recent years as farmers shift to more profitable crops, our high average yield — double the global average — is maintained thanks to advanced farming techniques.

For 2024, the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA) estimates Vietnam’s pepper output will reach approximately 170,000 tons, a 10% decrease from 2023. Despite these fluctuations, Vietnam remains the world’s leading producer and exporter.

2. Main Pepper Varieties and Market Prices

Pepper is classified based on its processing method and ripeness, creating distinct flavors and uses:

  • Black Pepper: The most common type, made from green, mature pepper berries that are sun-dried until their outer skin wrinkles and turns black. Black pepper offers a strong, pungent flavor and is widely used to add spice and aroma to countless dishes.
  • White Pepper (Peeled Pepper): Produced from ripe red pepper berries, which are then soaked to remove the outer skin, leaving only the whitish core. White pepper has a stronger heat than black pepper but is less aromatic, often used in light-colored dishes to maintain aesthetic appeal.
  • Green Pepper: These are young, unripe pepper clusters harvested while still green and tender. Green pepper has a milder heat and a fresh, delicate aroma, often used fresh in stews, grilled dishes, or pickled.
  • Red Pepper: Whole ripe red pepper berries, either sun-dried or machine-dried. Red pepper boasts a beautiful color, a milder heat, and a more nuanced aroma than black pepper due to retaining its ripe outer layer.
